Before submitting, please read ABOUT THE CONTESTS and GENERAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES. We make every effort to keep guidelines concise yet clear—meaning this is necessary information to avoid mistakes on your part and ours.
NOTE: If you submit art on the last three days of the contest, you will experience delays or issues due to volume of submissions we receive. Please send an email without art attached to confirm your submission and include all details.

TYPES OF ART CONSIDERED
- Any type of visual art from acrylics, watercolors, charcoal, and photography to photographic representations of sculptures, ceramics, and installations
- Color and black and white accepted. All images accepted for publication will be published in black and white, except for cover art. (Art is displayed in color on website after publication.)
- NO AI-generated material is accepted. If AI-based submissions are discovered, submission is disqualified and you will not be eligible to submit to our press in the future.
FORMATTING YOUR ART
- We accept JPEG (JPG extension) files ONLY. Name JPEG file the title of art. Titles required—“untitled” not accepted.
- Do NOT include name on image. If art is signed, “blackout” signature.
- VERTICAL photos PREFERRED for inside—we accept horizontal art, but vertical images are better highlighted since page size limits images to 4 inches wide.
- HORIZONTAL photos are REQUIRED for cover—we only consider horizontal artwork on the cover because it must wrap front to back and bleed on all edges.
- The same image submitted in two ways, i.e., cropped as vertical for inside and horizontal for cover is considered ONE PIECE.
- Inside Photo Requirements—JPEG file with resolution of 300 dpi and at least 4” x 6” in size.
- Cover Photo Requirements—JPEG file with resolution of 300 dpi and at least 12” x 9” in size.
STEPS TO SUBMIT
- Submit fee (see instructions at bottom of this page). You may submit your fee before or after you email your submission. All submissions will be processed once the fee is received.
- Email submission to kakalak@carolina.rr.com.
- Send JPEG files only. We cannot convert other file types.
- Email art files AS ATTACHMENTS and send multiple emails as needed. (Art sent in body of email will not print right.)
- Your email’s subject line should read “[Your Name] Art Submission to Kakalak 2026: Email 1 of __.”
- Remember to include personal information in the body of email, not on art. (See GENERAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES for info to include.)
- Remember to NAME your JPEG files the same as what you have listed in your email.
REMINDERS
- Submission fee is $10 for up to 3 pieces. (The same image submitted in two ways, i.e., cropped as vertical for inside and horizontal for cover is considered ONE PIECE.)
- Multiple submissions allowed with separate entry fee for each group of up to 3 pieces.
- Work must be unpublished and has not won a monetary prize elsewhere. (See ABOUT THE CONTESTS for definition of “unpublished.”)

- First Prize = $300
- Second Prize = $150
- Third Prize = $75
- Honorable Mention = $20
- Cover Art = $100
NOTE: Any piece chosen as cover art is also eligible to receive one of the other art prizes.
All those accepted for publication receive one free copy of published book.
Payment of prizes is contingent upon artists granting first-time publication rights to Moonshine Review Press for publication in KAKALAK 2026. Prize money is paid at time of publication. Artists agree that, should their artwork be published again elsewhere, they will acknowledge KAKALAK 2026 as the place of first publication.

You may send your submission via email at any time, but your payment must be received before your submission will be accepted/processed. Please NOTE the payment instructions below assume you are familiar with how to use the app/method.
DO NOT submit your payment to PayPal multiple times, even if you receive an error message! Fees will be deducted from any refund. If unsure your payment processed, do not panic! Please email Anne Kaylor (Kakalak@carolina.rr.com) directly for verification. Be patient—you will receive a response (but not necessarily immediately).
