Please read these general guidelines and follow the links below for specific poetry or art guidelines.
BEFORE SUBMITTING, PLEASE DO THREE THINGS:

- Use “SUBMIT ART” or “SUBMIT POETRY” buttons below to link to individual contests.
GENERAL GUIDELINES (for ALL submissions):
ELIGIBILITY: Anyone
FEE: $10 to submit up to 3 pieces. Multiple submissions are allowed with a separate entry fee for each group of up to 3 pieces.
- ENTRY FEE INSTRUCTIONS are located at the end of the “SUBMIT ART” and “SUBMIT POETRY” pages.
- TO SUBMIT, email your submission to kakalak@carolina.rr.com. We only accept submissions via email (your submission will be processed once we receive the entry fee).
INFORMATION WE REQUIRE—In the body of your email, include the following:
- Your full name as you want it to appear in Kakalak
- Name as submitted to us by PayPal or your Venmo ID (if applicable).
- USPS mailing address—If accepted, needed to mail your copy
- Phone number
- Email address
- Titles of submissions—Should match file name and title in document.
We accept unpublished work and work that has not won a monetary prize in another contest. We define “unpublished” as not previously appearing in a print or online publication. (See ABOUT THE CONTESTS for full details.)
NO AI-generated material is accepted. If AI-based submissions are discovered, submission is disqualified and you will not be eligible to submit to our press in the future.
We do NOT accept pornography or pieces promoting hatred of any kind.
Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but please notify us immediately if your piece is accepted elsewhere.
PRIZES
- POETRY First Prize = $300
- POETRY Second Prize = $150
- POETRY Third Prize = $75
- POETRY Honorable Mention = $20
- ART First Prize = $300
- ART Second Prize = $150
- ART Third Prize = $75
- ART Honorable Mention = $20
- COVER ART = $100
NOTE: Any piece chosen as cover art is also eligible to receive one of the other art prizes.
All accepted for publication receive one free copy of the published book.
Payment of any prize is contingent upon poets and artists granting first-time publication rights to Moonshine Review Press for publication in KAKALAK 2026. Prize money is paid at time of publication. Poets and artists agree that, should their piece be published again elsewhere, they will acknowledge KAKALAK 2026 as the place of first publication.
